Viral Hemorrhagic Fever :: science

Viral Hemorrhagic FeverHow would you like it if you died? Well thats whats incident to people in Africa. Their families die around them, facing pagesing the detrimental disease further into the ecosystem. Killing at will, this potent filovirus sweeps through villages with reckless abandon, destroying anything and everything in its way, and then just as mysteriously as it came, it disappears without a trace. Even with our modern technologies, we still dont really know too much about this death sentence disguised as a virus. In the following, I will do my best to teach you about Ebola, its cousins, where its from, executable cures, effects, and so on. If we want to, we can find a cure. We control our destiny, and its up to us to find an anecdote to this killing machine. The Ebola virus is a passing contagious filovirus that can be transmitted by re-use of unsterilized syringes, needles, and directly transferring it by contact of bodily fluids that contain high levels, or bricks o f virus. Aerosol transmission system cannot be counted out, but water vapor containing secretions of Ebola are known to spread the infection. Seeing that Ebola can be spread in numerous ways, including being spread from animal to human, and visa-versa, monkey handlers who work with Ebola ridden monkeys have broken out with the infamous hemorragic fever. The animal-to-human spread of the virus has also killed off African tribes that eat animals with high titers of the deadly virus. Ebola is an infectious disease of many faces. It has strains, such as Mayinga, or Cardinal, which are mainly named after people, or places that they are discovered in. Strains are slightly assorted versions of a certain virus. Ebolas three types that are known are Ebola Zaire, Ebola Sudan, and Ebola Reston. Ebola Zaire was first discovered in 1976 in Zaire. It is the deadliest disease of all of the Ebola strains with a 9 out of 10 kill rate (see fig. 1-1). Ebola Sudan kills over 1/2 of the people it come s in contact with. It was discovered in 1976 also. Ebola Reston was named after Reston, Virginia, which had a shipment of cynomolgus macaques, a type of monkey, infect a whole monkey house with Ebola. Ebola Reston has never killed anyone, but it killed 80% of the monkeys that it devastated. Ebola also has a very tightlipped cousin, Marburg. Under an electron microscope, they are clearly filoviradae.

Shakespeare the Psychologist? :: Biography Biographies Essays

Shakespeare the Psychologist?   I have found that most of the characters in William Shakespeares plays seem to be mad, or mentally disturbed in some way.  Shakespeares characters display psychological complaints such as schizophrenia, senility, psychosexual sicknesss, and many more.  Was this an early form of psychology or was he just relating to his own someoneal experiences.  In my paper, I will discuss some basic concepts of psychology, and how I believe Shakespeare explored the world of psychology through the individuals in his works.  I will also diagnose some of his famous characters from the plays &8220Hamlet&8221 and &8220King Lear.&8221 mental Concepts have been around since practically the beginning of time. Even Aristotle asked questions that would be classified as psychological in todays era (Wade and Tarvis, pg. 5). So Shakespeare was not the first person to use psychology but he may have been the first person to use a form of it in plays for an audience to see.  Psychology is defined as the discipline concerned with behavior and mental processes and how they are affected by an organisms physical state, mental state and external state (Wade and Tarvis, pg. 4).  It is evident in the plays that I have read that some of the characters in the plays have psychological disorders such as schizophrenia, split-personality disorder, Oedipus Complex, senility, and delusions.   Schizophrenia is defined as a psychotic disorder marked by positive symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations, and incoherent speech and negative symptoms such as emotional flatness and loss of motivation (Wade and Tarvis pg. 485).  A person woefulness from schizophrenia may have imaginary events happen to them or have imaginary people in their lives.  For example, a man suffering from schizophrenia may believe he has a best friend pick upd Joseph, when in fact there is no best friend at all.  Th is disorder can be treated with medication but never cured.  Another disorder showed in Shakespeare&8217s works is the split-personality disorder.  The Split-personality Disorder is defined as a disorder marked by the appearance within one person of tow or more distinct personalities, each with its own name and traits (Wade and Tarvis pg. 479).  The Oedipus Complex is another psychological disorder presented in Shakespeare&8217s work and is defined as a conflict in which a nipper desires

The Canterbury Tales: Applying Chaucers Criticism to Modern Society :: Sociology

The Canterbury Tales Applying Chaucers Criticism to Modern Society It is not hard to apply Chaucers description of the greedy doctor to todays medical system, nor is it difficult to find contemporaneous people with equivalent personalities to those of many of Chaucers other characters. However, it is the administrations of his time as well as their flaws and hypocrisies that Chaucer is almost critical of he uses the personalities of his characters primarily to highlight those flaws. The ii institutions that he is most critical of have lost much, if not all, of their influence in many instances, the Church has only slight hold on the lives and attitudes of the people as a whole, and the strict feudal system has entirely disappeared. Few institutions today are as clearly visible and universally influential as those two forces were in the Middle Ages, so, if Chaucer were writing his tales today, he would most likely turn to the hypocritical attitudes of the general populace and the idiosyncracies of our daily lives. He gives some emphasis to these in the Tales (for example, he mentions the prioresss ladylike compassion for even the smallest creature in the Prologue, but has her tell an anti-Semitic tale later), but, in todays American culture, he would be most likely to criticize businessmen, middle-class parents, and the demand formust instantaneous gratification. One of the things Chaucer would be most likely to point out about many big- businessmen would be the hypocrisy of their supposed love of sports. To truly love sports implies a similar love of sportsmanship, fairness, and equality competition. In a marketplace where one technology union takes anothers product, reverse-engineers it (to avoid infringing on copyrights and patents), then sells it as its own, where is the sportsmanship? When that second company is already larger and has wider market contacts and greater marketing budgets, there is also no fairness. As for equality in the workplace and j ob-market, with age, gender and racial discrimination, that is difficult to find, too. The reason Chaucer would criticize the businessmen on the top as well as the institution itself would be because, since they are in positions of power, they can change things. Some try to others more often dont. Another case is that of the middle-class parent who protests the deterioration of take aim standards, decries the loss of national morals, and ironically neglects his or her own child.

Exploring Strategy

AbstractThis essay examines the state of the hi-fi sector utilizing the PESTEL and Porters Five Forces. This assessment illustrated that with factors depending heavily on engineering science there is a real opportunity in the accurate sector. Any researcher exploring this question will find mensurate in this report.1 IntroductionThis essay examines the high fidelity sector utilizing the PESTEL and Porters Five Forces computer simulations in order to assess the current trade environment. Identifying the primary opportunities and threats that are present in the dramatic art will create a condenser for anticipation and adaptation that jackpot add signifi slewt value to both business strategy. Beginning with a PESTEL outline followed by distinct opportunities, threats and let on drivers for change, this essay illustrates the state of the high fidelity diligence. Following this segment with a relevant Porters Five Forces evaluation including general industry winningness will hike enhance the illustration of economic viability in the industry.2 PESTEL AnalysisThis section utilizes the PESTEL model to evaluate market conditions.2.1 PESTELYuksel (2012) defines the PESTEL as an interconnected analysis including the elements of political, economic, socio- ethnic, expert, environment and legal in order to visualize a sectors content.2.1.1 PoliticalPolitically, the high-fidelity sector is supported in their effort to produce a superior mathematical product for a diverse inter field of study market (Jansson and Waxel, 2011). Politics influence the modern Hi Fi market to continually innovate and build, reflecting the Hi-Fi industry contain for continuous technological input. Regulations and taxation play a direct role in how well the Hi Fi industry international trade statutes obtain the emf to promote positive development (Jansson et al, 2011). Companies including the advanced manufacturing firm Linn contribute a substantial amount in taxes and i nternational revenue to their nations coffers, enhancing the political need to protect them (The Economist, 2014). Companys including Richer Sounds maintain 100 per cent UK operations, using this support as a means of positive markering (Sounds, 2014). The Telegraph (2010) article lays out the attractive tax cuts that the Chinese government utilizes to entice the emerging Hi Fi companies to set up operation there. With each tax rate adjustment companies including Acramm space and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide among others will seek out tax suckns that allow them to retain revenue (Telegraph, 2010). Decisions by the UK regulatory body, including the decision to take the nation digital has a spectacular deal of influence on the continued development of the UK Hi Fi industry (Kessler, 2014). With figures illustrating that only one in 20 have receivers capable of this unfermented transmittance as well as only 40 per cent of sunrise(prenominal) vehicles are equipped with the t echnology, there is a considerable gap to be address before employation (Kessler, 2014).2.1.2. EconomicEconomic factors in for Hi-Fi firms have the potency to substantially assist nations in their economic recovery efforts (The Economist, 2014). This factor impacts the Hi Fi industry with through and through direct acknowledgement and support of technological advances (Macintosh, 2010). Lacking this opportunity for festering stagnates the market now influencing production and development.. International statistics demonstrate a slow 1% growth rate in the industry over the past year (Euromonitor.com. 2014). Yet, long term country reports indicate a steady pattern of growth (Euromonitor.com, 2014). The Hi Fi industry has begun to focus on the exalted end products including Acrams newest cinema receiver citing the argument that features are more(prenominal) important than fidelity (End, 2014). The scrimping can create issues for the industry by failing to provide consumers with the funding to buy products. Linn, another UK Hi Fi brand has used this same philosophy to operate a leader in the speech soundphile streaming music hardware area, a very rapidly developing area (End, 2014). Yet, there is a real potentiality for a lack of innovation that fails to produce useful products. Further establishing this trend is Naims offering of hi resolution music products that appeal to the very high end market including the Nait 5si and the SuperNait 2 (End, 2014). However, the economic conditions can hinder the opportunity for these offerings to take hold.2.1.3. Socio-cultureThe very spirit of the spread of technology is a benefit for the Hi-Fi industry (Andy, 1997 Macintosh, 2010 The Economist, 2014). Yet, if there is a perception of negativity surrounding any corporation or product, there is the opportunity for a diminished reach. With each new audile advance, the Hi-Fi sector has an opportunity to utilize their technology to enhance that offering (May, Mason and Pinch, 2001). Yet, conversely, any misstep in the innovation process can set the entire effort back. The continuous advance in technology aids in producing new employment opportunities which enhances the entire system (Pratt, 1997).There is a strong desire on the part of the consumer and manufacturers to create the very best auditory offering (The Economist, 2014). This element of complementary competition enhances the potential in the Hi-Fi industry, yet increases the price consumers feel at the retailer. As companys including Acram, Linn and Naim compete to produce high end offerings, the entire range of development opportunities benefits (End, 2014). This acceptance of hi tech equipment has an associated ripple impact on stores that sell these products, increasing their technology capacity (End, 2014). As new products emerge, the stores upgrade in order to implement the product, thereby changing the entire culture surrounding the offering.2.1.4 TechnologicalThere has been a historical shift from a Hi Fi industry based on individual components to a modern real market based on emerging technology (Sounds, 2014). This factor directly impacts the Hi Fi industries capacity to produce useable products. With the advances technology has created including the comprehension of LCD television, audiophile and multi room Hi Fi progress there is a perception of increasing value in the industry. The increase in complexity alongside diminution in size and integrateable capacity make Hi-Fi products critical components for many new technologies (The Economist, 2014 Macintosh, 2010). This is a clear indication of the support that each of these areas offers the Hi-Fi sector. Online advances including network offerings have the potential to increase the utilization of the Hi-Fi product, thereby increasing the markets intrinsic value (Macintosh, 2010). Todays leaders in the industry including addict Follis cite the fact that modern Hi Fi offerings are better than ever b efore (End, 2014). This fact includes the recognition that as technology continues to turn from individual components to integrated technology, the Hi Fi sector will continue innovate in order to remain relevant.2.1.5 EnvironmentalModern production concerns can have an impact on the manufacturing of any Hi-Fi product (The Economist, 2014). These concerns can significantly slow development and production of any product line. With aspects including pollution during production there is the potential for this aspect to create pernicious operating conditions. This contention supports the argument that a strategy that incorporates these elements benefits the entire effort (Jansson et al, 2011).2.1.6 LegalMultinational and international legalities have an opportunity to impact the Hi-Fi development and production capacity (Jannsson et al, 2011). As laws change as nations jockey for position and revenue causing a collateral impact for the companies involved. Competition between industry ri vals can be fierce, requiring a strong a consistent legal awareness (The Economist, 2014).2.2 Opportunities and ThreatsThere is a real opportunity to capitalize on emerging technologies in order to enlarge the Hi-Fi industry capacity (The Economist, 2014). Yet, there is a threat of poorly ruleed products that diminish trade. Real time drills including continued development of the IPod and Ipad based technology, tablets and individualized computers integration lead the way for considerable opportunities in the industry (Macintosh, 2010). The economic factors support the argument of growing opportunities in the field of home audio and ocular serve to drive the consideration of potential revenue gain in the market (The Economist, 2014). Companies such as Linn and Acram have a unique opportunity to decree emerging technology in order to reach the high end clientele (End, 2014). Conversely, the PESTLE confirms the threat that any overextension in an effort to remain matched can di minish production and development potential (Jannsson et al, 2011).Advances in the field of medicine provide ample opportunity for the Hi Fi industry to benefit from auditory related sales as well as building real brand awareness (The Economist, 2014). Elements of the Hi-Fi industry touch on the developing technology surrounding Wi-Fi and the internet, providing further opportunity for the industry to gain market share (Jannsson et al, 2011). Yet, the need for technology can slow a development process, diminishing a companys revenue potential. An opportunity in the Hi-Fi industry rests in the field of cell phone and portable communication (The Economist, 2014).The PESTLE demonstrates that national and international variances in regulations can become a substantial detriment for the Hi Fi industry (Moodysson and Jonsson, 2007). There is a real threat for established companies including Acram, Quad and Warfeldale among others to move to China in order to take advantage of the lower ta x brackets (Telegraph.co.uk, 2010). Yet, each emerging market and technological advance is an opportunity for the Hi-Fi industry to further integrate (Macintosh, 2010). A balanced consideration must take place in order to successfully implement strategy.2.3 Key drivers for changeLeading the key drivers for the Hi-Fi industry is the need for advances in production, marketing and development (Macintosh, 2010 The Economist, 2014 Jannsson et al, 2011). Every new change at each level will have a direct impact on the consumer and the industry. The second driver remains the political environment on where these companies choose to develop their products (Telegraph.co.uk, 2010). Lacking a positive environment, the capacity for the Hi Fi industry to operate will be further driven by the rate of revenue available in the market (End, 2014). These drivers will determine marketing efforts and production levels for all company in the market.3 Porters Five Forces Analysis3.1 Porters Five ForcesHug gins and Izushi (2011) define the Porters Five Forces model as efficient manner of market assessment including the element s of new entrants, substitution, bargain power and competitive rivalry.3.1.1 Threat of new entrantsThe growth potential of the Hi-Fi industry makes the threat of new entrants substantial (The Economist, 2014). There is a clear opportunity for increased brand awareness accompanied by the potential to add a substantial revenue stream to any companys income. With companies including Linn and Acram focussing on the high end market, there is recognition of value that will be emulated by others (End, 2014). These elements are consistent with the needs of many competitors in other areas of the technology market such as computers, tablets and personal electronics (The Economist, 2014). The Hi-Fi industry is highly attractive to evolving and developing entities as well as established companies (Jannsson et al, 2011). Established companies can easily expand and advertise , while new entrants can progressively build and promote themselves.This area is of high concern due to the rate of new entrants.3.1.2 Threat of Substitute productsThe Hi-Fi sector is dependent on technology, the availability of copies, or similarities in products is high (Jannsson et al, 2011). With emerging nations, such as China, offering substantial potential for competition this is a significant concern for any Hi-Fi strategy. Expanding on this same threat of substitution is the fact that some nations allow for copies of a successful product based on their own design (Jannsson et al, 2011). Regulation s and their enforcement have the potential to play a key role in reducing or increasing the substitutions for any Hi-Fi product on the market. With companies recognizing that products including the Xbox and Playstation among others, can take on the role of other instruments, the threat rises (End, 2014).Developing and competing products make this a category of high impact.3.1.2 Ba rgaining power of customersThe consumer centred nature of the Hi-Fi industry makes it highly dependent on the perception and application of their products (Jannsson et al, 2011). Any faulty offering or substandard item will directly impact the companys bottom line (The Economist, 2014). Modern consumers demand an integrateable produce that has the latest technology at the lowest prices, making their overall talk terms power substantial. There is a need to remain on the edge in the mind of the consumer in order to continually expand brand inscription (Macintosh, 2010). Acram and Linns current move into the upper end market has been favourably received by the consumers, driving their position in the market higher dower to advance their market share considerably (End, 2014). Yet, any failure would provide amply incentive for these same consumers to seek another brand (The Economist, 2014). Resting on the make up anticipation of needs this is an area of moderate to high precedence. 3.1.3 Bargaining power of suppliersThe high number of competitors alongside the proliferation of technology diminishes the bargaining power of suppliers (The Economist, 2014). If one company is not willing or able to make a product, there are several others that will (Moodysson et al, 2007). However, the more advanced technology that the company possesses, the more likely that that effort will be successful in the market (Jannsson et al, 2011). Yet, in the role of specific technology there is the real opportunity to have a strong bargaining strategy based on the knowledge the company has (Jannsson et al, 2011). If one company does not possess a certain technology, their associated bargaining position will suffer. Linn, noting the potential available in the market, spent liberally to develop the audiophile music download label that propels their current sales strategy (End, 2014). This example has been emulated by companies such as Naim, which hope to become a prominent member of th e market (End, 2014).With many suppliers available, there is a low to moderate priority in this segment.3.1.4 Intensity of competitive rivalryThe potential for revenue and sustainability make the Hi-Fi sector highly competitive (Jannsson et al, 2011 The Economist, 2014). This rivalry consists of companies including Linn, Acram and Niam, often accounting for the majority of the market share, provides a dynamic illustration of the desire of each company to provide the very best Hi Fi product (End, 2014). There is competition at every level of production, development and marketing in order to make the most of the emerging product (Macintosh, 2010). However, this intensity of competition allows for a consistent series of technological advances which is a clear benefit to consumers and manufacturers (The Economist, 2014). With each advance the opportunity to become a market leader will lead to an intense effort to be the first producer.The competitive environment makes this element very high concern for the Hi Fi industry.3.2 persistence AttractivenessThere is a real opportunity to gain both brand awareness and consumer loyalty with a quality Hi-Fi offering, making the market attractive (The Economist, 2014). The long term consumer trend of sustainable spending is a further indication of positive long term market potential (Euromonitor, 2014). Yet, the fact that this is a well-known fact encourages other manufacturers to maintain a position in the market, making competition fierce (Moodysson et al, 2007)). Each of these factors supports an illustration of a growing market that offers both a ripe opportunity for success and an equally spicy chance for failure. Naim and Linn both demonstrate a high degree of value in the area of Hi Fi industry innovation which in turn increases the overall attractiveness of the market (End, 2014).This is a moderate factor in overall industry making the circumstances acceptable for continued expansion.4 Conclusion both(prenominal) t he PESTEL and the Porters Five Forces evaluations have illustrated the potential for both sustained revenue gain as well as increased brand awareness. This is a supporting argument for a strategy including the Hi-Fi sector. However, the very competitive nature alongside the nuances of technological innovation provides ample potential for loss. With factors depending heavily on technology there is a genuine opportunity for gain to be considered in the Hi-Fi sector.5 ReferencesDavid, F. R. 1999. Strategic management Concepts and cases. Succubus Heat CHAPTER 22

What close to aphon deoxyephedrinening? I asked stiffly. I waited then for the sh give aways, for the accu sit cumulationions. whatever of them would confuse been understandable. What I didnt expect were tears building up in her eye.I thinkI think some(a)things wrong. I think hes trying to permit me down easy or something.Why would you think that? I asked, guessing the answer.A sibylline pink blush blossomed on her cheeks. We havent been having sex. Each time I even off kind of suggest it, hes just notwell, he doesnt actu exclusivelyy influencem into it. lecture somewhat their sex life was i of the most painful conversation topics I could imagine, short of her realizing I was to blame for its problems. So, I kept up with my pokerfaced healer mode.How long has it been issue on?About a week.Yup, that made sense. That was right around the time my stasis had begun. Here Id been expecting Maddie to come after me, to pick up on nonpareil of the covert smacks Seth and I had shared. But she hadnt. It had never even crossed her mind to suspect me of everything duplicitous. In fact, shed come to me for help because I was one of the few people she trusted with something like this.And that made it all the worse when I had to lie to her. In both other situation, I would have advised a friend to take control of her relatio nship, to corner her man and not be used. And maybemaybe I should have. If I advised her to break up with Seth, that would clear the way for us. Did I want that again? I didnt hunch. I still wasnt thinking past the day I would turn into a succuba again. I was living irresponsibly, focusing on the now, and continued that here with Maddie.My next wrangling were spoken so winningly, so convincingly that there was no way she could ever think I didnt have her best inte abatements at heart. I might have been relying on my succubus abilities to smooth my hair all this time, but charming and persuading people was a core part of my personality. She never s besidesd a chance.A week? I gave her a gentle smile. Thats not very long. You cant really base a major crisis on that yet-especially when you consider who youre dealing with. I mean, like you say, youve seen him get so busy with work that he cancels or even go outs things, right?Yeah, she say, sniffling in a continued attempt to keep back her tears. Its just never been like this. I dont know. Ive never had a serious relationship. I dont know how its supposed to work.You guys have only been going out for, like, four months. It takes longer than that to really get to know someones patterns. With a pang, I realized she and Seth had dated longer than he and I had. This may be one youve got to get used to. Hes probably tense uped, and sex is the last thing on his mind-as hard as that is to believe. Give him some time. If it keeps happening, then it might be time to worry. But its in like manner soon now.I could tell by her face that my words had given her hope. Yeahyoure probably right. Butdo you thinkdo you think Im doing something wrong? Should I do something different? Act differently? garnishee sexier?Oh God. I so did not want to be advising Maddie on how to seduce Seth. WellI wouldnt worry round any of that quite yet. Overthinking itll just stress you out more. Just wait a brusque bit. If somethings on his mind, it may take him some time to work by it.Shed defeated her tears and now adopted a resolute look. Sometimes I dont know if Im fooling myself, like that Im just caught up in my first big romance. But, seriously, some days, I feel like Ive found the one. Like if he wanted to run off right now, Id do it. The love on her face was like a bullet through my heart. If somethings wrong, I want to help him through it.I know, I know, but you still dont know what it is. If its a writing thing, hes got to work it out. If its something elsewell, Im legitimate hell come talk about it when hes ready.Her dark eyes were contemplative, looking at me without beholding me while she processed all of this. Youre probably right, she said at last. She gave me a mild, rueful smile and shake her head. God, I feel kind of stupid. Look at me. Some kind of champion for strong women, huh? Did I mess up my makeup? And oh God, did I really just ask that?No, its fine. And youre not stupid. Your sentiments are normal. I stood up, needing to get out of here. The room was making me claustrophobic. I had to get away from her, away from her trust. Im going to go do a sweep. They should be opening any minute.She rose as well and ran a hand over her eyes one last time. Yeah, Ive got things to do too. Thanks for listening to me. Before I could open the door, she gave me a small, fierce hug. Im glad youre my friend.With that, she go forth to tend to her work. Meanwhile, I wished a hole would open on the floor and swallow me up. I almost wished Nanette would show up and end my misery. Thankfully, I only had two hours until I was impact romish. Then Id be free of this misery and self-loathing that Maddie was unknowingly stirring up in me. But if Id hoped store business would prove a distraction, I was wrong. A half-hour later, an errand to the caf? brought me face-to-face with Seth.He sat at a table with his laptop and looked up as though he could sense that I was nearby. He smiled, and my h eart raced. I smiled back before I could stop myself. He looked like he wanted me to come over, yet I worried about attracting attention or tipping others off. Of course, it might actually look more suspicious if I didnt talk to him, I realized. Long ago, it was perfectly common for me to stop by and chat with him. No one had ever perceived it as anything more than friendly banter.So, after dropping off some books, I strolled over and sat across from him. Hey, I said, feeling warm under his gaze.Hey, he replied. You look beautiful today.I glanced down and laughed. Along with my limited wardrobe, I was also discovering that not doing laundry decreased my clothing options even further. I was in jeans and a plain black T-shirt today, and my hair had been lucky to get a dissolute brushing, let alone any real styling. Id overslept and figured beachcombing didnt require much primping anyway.Liar, I said. I practically rolled out of bed this morning.You forget that Ive seen you in just ab out every state imaginable. You dont have to have every detail primped and perfect. Youre beautiful even when youre disheveled. Sometimes more so.Hey Are you verbalise Im disheveled now?No, youre somewhere in the middle of primped and disheveled. And you still look beautiful.I received compliments all the time, but from him, they were golden and wonderful. Even the smallest ones. And you, I said, seem to try to be disheveled.He ran a hand over his slightly messy hair. I think his intent was to smooth it, but he only mussed it further. People spend fortunes on hair gel to get this look, you know.And fortunes on shirts like that, I said, gesturing to his vintage Ovaltine T-shirt. There are collectors whod pay a lot of money for that on eBay.I am one of those people.I laughed. Theres a treasure trove of T-shirts waiting for you in Vancouver, you know. I kept seeing them and thinking of you.With each moment that passed, I fell further and further into that electric, consuming connectio n between us. Love for him filled me, made me feel complete. divergence him would have been agonizing just then, and I saw a similar sentiment for me on his face. Id sat down, feeling guilty and conflicted over Maddie, but once I was with himwell, it was selfish and horrible, but I couldnt help but stay. And honestly, it became hard for me to fret too much over her feelings because I was too caught up in my own for him. I wanted him. I wanted him to be mine. I wanted him to love me. And yet, I knew as soon as I left the table, Id feel bad about her again. There was no way this could end well.Do you have any more trips scheduled up there? He lowered his voice, the flirty look now gone and transposed by concern.No, I think Im done with my international travel. Ive just got to figure out things here nowor, well, theyll be figured out for me in another day or so. Things are going to return to normal with or without Jerome soon.His expression grew troubled, and he glanced away from me to contemplate out the window. Wed both cognise the inevitable was coming from the beginning, yet neither of us had been able to talk about it then. It looked like we still couldnt talk about it now. There were a million things we should be discussing, but all we could think about was each other. All we wanted was each other. Wed spent so much of our time with boundaries between us that now that there were none, we just wanted to childishly lose ourselves in our longings and not think about the consequences-even though the consequences would be catching up with us any day now.Well, Seth said finally. I just hope you stay safe. Are you any closer to purpose him?I hesitated. papist had told me not to trust anyone. I was pretty sure that Seth wasnt going to go run off to any demons in the flying field and report what I said. I also suspected, however, that Seth wouldnt be happy to find out papistic was in my life again, no matter how selfless Roman claimed to be right now. Seth wouldnt trust him. Hell, I didnt trust him.Ive got a few promising leads, I said finally. I fancy about Grace. Some more promising than othersIm just not sure if I can do anything with them.Still traipsing beaches? Do you need me and Kayla again?I thought she had something going onThe look on his face said he would do anything for me. Yeah, but if you really needed her, I could try to pull some strings. If you wanted.Oh, did I. A pleasant, aching yearning gathered in my chest. There was nothing Id love more than to spend another afternoon with the two of them, even if it was peeping for rocks. It had let me indulge in the illusion of being a family.No, Im fine. Reluctantly, I let the image go. As much as I wanted to be with them again, Roman was the better partner on my hunts now. I would rather put him at risk than Kayla, and anyway, he was more likely to be able to know what to do if we actually found what we were looking for. I glanced at the clock. In fact, I need to refrain up my work here. My shifts over soon, and I cant be late.Seths face was a mixture of worry and disappointment. No lunch, huh?I couldnt be certain, but I suspected lunch with him would have involved both nutriment and sex in some surreptitious location. Damn. I wanted both.Sadly, I shook my head. I wish I couldbut this comes first. Im sorry. For half a second, I remembered Maddie in the office, so sad and heartbroken. I even thought about Dante and his compulsive spending. If I had any scrap of lessonity left in my put forward soul, Id tell Seth that we needed to end this, right now. But like every other time Id told myself that, I never listened. Maybemaybe tonight, thoughRoman and I would be done searching. Dante might be around, but wellId deal with that later. I felt confident I could dodge any plans he might want to make. Details like that didnt matter. Only being alone with Seth again did. How could being around him affect me like this?He nodded, as eager as me. Call me whe n youre free.I started to joke that Id never be free, but that wasnt what hed meant. Standing up, I hoped I looked like I was release a platonic conversation and that I wasnt actually struggling with the temptation to kiss him good-bye. We stared at each other for a few heavy moments, and with his eyes, Seth said a million things, both sweet and indecent. Walking away, I was certain that anyone whod seen us would instantly realize what was going on-but no one seemed to be paying attention to us.My shift wound down rapidly after that, and as I walked home afterward, I heard invisible footsteps travel on with me. I know youre there, I said under my breath. I didnt want anyone thinking I was crazy. Glad to see your voyeur ways havent changed.My car was position behind my building today, and as I rounded the corner onto a quiet block, Roman materialized beside me. He looked gorgeous, smug, and dangerous. The usual.I hope you had an entertaining time next me around. I took my keys o ut.You should be a reality show, he said. Its that good. And you know, I might be a totally unstable former assassin, but man. You manage to blow out of the water even me.Oh, be quiet, I snapped. I unlocked the car doors and slid into the drivers side. Your snarky commentary is neither wanted nor appreciated.Its not commentary. Its me thinking aloud. It has nothing to do with you, really, nor does it require any response on your part.This is it, isnt it? I asked, pulling out of the parking spot. This is why you arent going to kill me. Youre going to just torture me for the peace of eternity. Long suffering, right?He grinned, flashing perfect white teeth against his tanned skin. It triggered a memory in me, how Id once found that so attractive. Now, though, my fear and unease blockade any sort of desire.I suppose thats one way of looking at it. And besides, dont act like there isnt some part of you that occultly enjoys play this eternally woeful, tormented role. If you were happ y, you wouldnt know what to do with yourself.Thats not true. I was surprised to feel myself blushing. Stop trying to fuck with me.Im just intrigued, thats all. You wear this mask of moral superiority. So does Mortensen. Yet, here you two are, sneaking around.You dont understand. Were in love. The wry look Roman gave me immediately made me regret my words.Oh, I understand. Believe me, I do. I kept my eyes on the road. He had once told me he loved me, and Id thrown it back in his face. If you guys were so in love, whyd you break up in the first place? You were fawning all over each other the last time I saw you.For a lot of reasons, I mused. Its complicated.It always is.I sighed. Edmonds was about twenty five minutes away. This was going to be a long drive.Well, not that its any of your business, but I mean, there were a lot of things going on. We were having communication problems, for one thing.How terribly mundane.And I was starting to freak out-you know, about how he could die. I didnt think I could handle that. I waited for Romans snide response to that, but there was none. And, of courseI mean, there was always sex. I wouldnt do it. I couldnt stand the thought of stealing part of his life away. Our love wasnt dependent on sexbut well, it still muddled things up.And now you have no problem with sex.Because I cant hurt him now Look, I cant help the timing-or the fact that we still care about each other.Or the fact that each of you have significant others. Now I stayed silent. Roman tipped his head back against the seat thoughtfully. In all my observations this week, Ive got to admit, I like Maddie.I like her too, I said quietly.But that guy youre geological dating? Well, I think you can do better.Im almost starting to wish youd kill me.Oh, Ive thought about it, he said. To my dismay, the joking was gone from his voice. Again, I refused to look at him. Im sorryabout Helena. I never meant for that to happen.Roman gave a laugh that sounded like it choked him. Oh? What did you think would happen, then? A slap on the wrist? I survived it, and I was still in pretty bad shape.You said you were going to kill Carter. And I didnt know who else youd go after, I said quietly. I didnt know what else to do. There was no easy option for me.There would have been if youd really loved me like you said you did, he replied bitterly. And I told you Id deviate the rest of them alone.It was too late when you told me that. By then, Id already called for help. I didnt add that in a way, I really had loved him. It had been different from the way I loved Seth, but it had been love nonetheless.Well, whatever. Its not relevant now. Finding Jerome is whats important. Out of the side of my eye, I saw him study my profile. Of course, Im surprised youve been so eagerits going to put an end to your little affair.Its going to come to an end anyway. Id rather have Jerome in my life afterward than some other demon. In my mind, I could see Seths kind eyes and gentle smil e. I could almost feel the way his hands touched my body. Ill have the memories, at least. Theyll stay with me.Memories. Roman shook his head. How the hell can someone who fucks random men for a living be such a romantic idiot?I didnt answer that, and the rest of our drive contained little conversation. The place we were going to in Edmonds was another park. Funny, I thought, that humans kept sectioning off these magical places and preserving them. I wondered if they sensed that power on some inherent level. Id read up a little on this park and how it had some significance to Native Americans in the area. Surely that was promising. It was a small beach flanked by a woodsy area with picnic tables. Children ran around while their mothers watched.This place isnt very strong, said Roman, once we were out of the car. Theres a little magic in the earth but not much. I cant imagine theyd hide Jerome here-theyd want a lot more to mask it.I refused to let that drag me down. We have to look. We dont know anything for sure.The park wasnt huge. I suspected it would take us less time to search it than it would to drive back. Just as wed stepped out of the parking lot, my cell phone rang. I didnt recognize the number. Go on without me, I told Roman. When I answered, the voice was no one I recognized.Is this Letha, also known as Georgina Kincaid?I grimaced. Only high-up hellish employees called me by my original name. Yes.This is Ephraim, from Internal Affairs. The demons voice was clipped and hurried, giving the impression that I was the one whod called him and interrupt something. I found it amusing that hed called me rather than speak in person. more efficient, I guessed.I sat down at a picnic table. What can I do for you?Nothing, Im sure. But Ive been instructed to interview all lesser immortals in the area about The Jerome Situation. I could hear the capitalized letters in his voice, kind of like The Manhattan Project. First, Id like to know where you were when Jerome disappeared.On my way to Canada. Jerome had been lending me out to help Cedric.There was a moments pause. My records say that Cedric was in Seattle when Jerome disappeared.Well, when I left, Cedric was still up there, yeah. But then when the Army of Darkness did their thing on the Space Needle, I called Cedric because I figured hed want to know. I thought that was when he came down here.Did you say Army of Darkness?Um, yeah. Its this cult in Vancouver that was doing embarrassing things.Ah. The ones with the spray paint.Yup. Id been helping Cedric with them, and when he heard they were down here, I guess he came to talk to Jerome and do some damage control so Jerome wouldnt think hed sent them.Your informations incorrect. Cedric never met with Jerome.What? I frowned, thinking back to my conversation with Kristin. Id asked if Cedric had come to talk to Jerome, and while shed corroborate that hed been down here, she hadnt mentioned them actually speaking.When Cedric came, Jerome was already missing. He and Mei attempted to find him, and when the lesser immortals began showing the effects of the summoning, we knew what had happened. Ephraims words were still brisk. Clearly, he had no beguile in discussing what he already knew.I was close to something here-so, so close. Had Jerome been summoned before Cedric arrived? That would rule him out as the summoner. Of course, if Ephraim had received his information from Cedric, then it could have been a lie. Maybe Cedric was being framed. Maybe hed actually been here the exact moment Jerome was summoned. Mentioning Mei meant that she had probably corroborated Cedrics story. Which meant what, exactly? Was she in on this too? I knew Grace was involved already. It was possible Mei and Cedric were working with her, but that meant three demons were in the conspiracy now. There was only one reward in Seattle, and I couldnt see how theyd all benefit. Getting a large group of demons to organize was hard. Getting them to do it w hen it offered no advantage for all of them? Impossible.Ephraim was eager to get back on track. He asked me a few more questions about Jeromes disappearance and a bit about my day-to-day affairs. He never asked for my opinion about who should replace Jerome or what I thought of other demons. That wasnt particularly surprising, however. As my friends and I had discussed, our input probably wouldnt play a large role here.I hung up and went to find Roman. I expected him to have practically finished the search, but instead, I found him play ball with some kids over in a clearing near the trees. They were pretty little, and there wasnt much to the game. Mostly everyone stood in a circle and tossed the ball back and forth. Romans throws were gentle and carefully aimed so as to make it easy for the kids to catch the ball. I stood off to the side, watching them in wonder. He actually seemed pretty into it, and the oddity of a sociopathic half-angelic bastard playing with small children was nt lost on me.Roman caught sight of me watching them and tossed the ball over to a little girl. He left the circle to approach me, much to the dismay of the kids left behind. They entreated him to stay, but he merely waved and told them he had to go.Maybe we can come back later, he said jovially.I cant decide if that was wily or creepy, I told him. Maybe a little of both.Why creepy? I only kill immortal beings. Not kids.The fact that you just said all that with a straight face is proof enough. I gestured around. Did you check this place out?Nope. Didnt want to steal the fun from you. Who was on the phone?We started walking along the beach, and I recapped what Ephraim had told me. I almost told him what I knew about Grace, I admitted.No, better that you didnt, said Roman. We still need more information.Were running out of time, I grumbled. Theres not much more info we can get. And theres something theresomething weird about the day Jerome was summoned. I just cant- I froze, staring off down the beach. Roman. Look.He followed my gaze. There, near a trash can, was a patch of small, rough rocks mixed in with the sand. Gray and white. I ran off down the beach, ignoring the sand cream my shoes. Holy shit. After all these fruitless searches, after relying on all these sketchy half-assed clues, wed actually found something. Wed found Jerome, and not a moment too soon.Ignoring the looks of some startled kids, I knelt down near the rocks and began pushing them aside, digging through the sand. I realized then I should have brought a jigaboo or something. A few moments later, Roman arrived and stood over me.Well, what are you doing? I demanded. Help me.Hes not here, Georgina.He has to be Were near salt water. Theres sand. Theres white stones. For the rest of the seals camouflage to work, hes buried here somewhere.I cant sense anything. Hes not here.The rocks were cutting my hands as I dug, and I felt tears stinging my eyes. Until that moment, I didnt realize just how horribly and truly afraid Id been of Jerome not returning. My time as a succubus had been filled with upheaval. I liked the small slash of tranquility Id carved out here in Seattle. I didnt want that to change. I couldnt let it change, not after everything else Id been through recently.The whole point of the seal imprinting its magic was to mask Jeromes prison Of course you wouldnt feel it.The seal hides it from anyone not actively seeking it. I am, and Im telling you its not here.Maybe its because youre not strong enough.With a sigh, Roman knelt down behind me. Georgina, stop.Damn it He has to be hereRoman reached from behind me and grabbed my arms. I struggled, but he was too strong. Georgina, enough. Jerome isnt here. The only thing unusual about this spot is the smell from the garbage can. Im sorry.I struggled against him a little bit more and finally gave up. Apparently feeling certain I wouldnt fight anymore, Roman released me. I turned and looked at him, swallowing back my t ears. This was our last chance, I said softly. We dont have any time left.Roman studied me with his sea-green eyes. I saw no anger or threat on his face, only compassion. Im sorry. And you dont know for sure that its too late.Ephraim will finish his assessment anytime now. And where are we going to go next? The Olympic Peninsula? Wenatchee? Hitting places at random was one thing when they were in our backyard. These others are too faraway away. We choose the wrong one, and thats it. Game over. We wont have time for anything else.Im sorry, he repeated. From his face, I could see that he spoke the truth. I want to find him as much as you do.I stared beyond him out at the blue-gray water and the circling gulls. Why? Why do you want to find someone who tried to kill you?Roman smiled. Why do you cling to a romantic ideal when everything in your life has pretty much shown you that its impossible?I think hed spoken rhetorically and seemed surprised when I dragged my eyes from the water to look at him and answer. Because of a dream.He arched an eyebrow. What dream?I took a deep breath, and like that, the images flashed through my mind, just as vivid and real as theyd been the first time. Awhile agoNyx was here.He looked startled. What, the mother of time and chaos?Yeah. Long story.What is it about this urban center?Beats me. Anyway, she was preying on my energy and distracting me by sending me these dreams. They were so real, Roman. You cant even imagine. My voice was small as I spoke. I was washing dishes in a kitchen, and Sweet Home Alabama was playing. In the other room, there was this little girl sitting on a blanket. She hurt herself, and I came in there to foster her. She was maybe two or three, and she was mine . My daughter. Not someone elses. Not adopted. The daughter of my body. Aubrey was there too and this tortie and-A what?A tortie. A tortoiseshell cat. I waited, but his expression was still blank. Its like a calico, but without any white. Just brown a nd orange patches. How can you be millennia old and not know that?Because I dont subscribe to Cat Fancy magazine. And I cant believe you remember things like cat breed and background music.It was so real, I said quietly. More real than my own life. I remember everything.Whatever snarky retort was on his lips disappeared, and he turned serious again. Im sorry I interrupted. So, what happened then? With you, the girl, and the cattery?We were just all there together, warm and happy. Then a car pulled up outside, and I carried the girl out to look. A man was getting out, and he was the one . My lover, my husband, her father. The one my life centered around.Who was he? Roman asked, face intent.I shook my head. I dont know. I couldnt see his face. It was dark out, and it was snowing. I just know that I loved him, and that he and the girl completed my life.Roman didnt answer right away as he turned my words over. But it was a dream.I dont know. Nyx can show the futureshe showed others thei rs. She claimed this was mine, but its impossible. I cant have any of that. And yetand yet, you secretly hope it might be true.Yeah. And when this whole stasis thing happened, I thought maybeAgain, Roman completed my words. maybe it could be true. After all, you could suddenly touch Seth. Maybe you could have a kid too?Hed guessed my secret hope. I didnt know. I still dont. Maybe I can get pregnant. I mean, my body is kinda sorta human, right?Yes. But not enough. I dont know every detail of this whole demonic hierarchy and the way they channel their powers, but I know you cant have kids. Even if you seem human, youre still immortal. You still belong to Hell. Im sorry.I held his eyes for a moment and then looked down. Well. I guess I cant really be surprised by that, huh? And I have no reason to trust Nyx anyway. Not after what she did.There it was. No kids. Another piece of the dream had slipped away from me. All I had left was the faceless man, the man I wanted to be Seth, and even that seemed unlikely now.Roman tugged me up. Come on. Lets head back before the rain comes. Well get some ice cream. Maybe thatll cheer you up.Im not really sure ice cream can fix my failed hopes and dreams or an impending demonic takeover.Probably not. But itll help.

Heredity, the Environment, and Development Essay

The field of lookal inheritables strives to understand how and why we develop the way we do. Behavioral ingredienttics trys to find how not only heredity, but also surroundings, plays a role in the development of human beings. The field has evolved quite a bit in the last few years. Studying genics helps us to be able to predict futurity behaviors and also potentiall(a)y help us to use genetic engineering. Since the domain of behavioural genetics can potentially lead us down the road of genetic engineering it attracts a lot of controversy.As depart be examined here genetics shows some strong correlation coefficients between heredity and environment. The field has studied numerous examples to help explain what is caused by heredity, what is caused by environment, and how the dickens can be linked together to further understand why we be select the way that we do.Behavior GeneticsHuman behavioral genetics, a relatively new field, seeks to understand both the genetic and envi ronmental contributions to individual variations in human behavior. (McInerney, 2008) Human behavior genetics studies how an individuals genetics and environment influences their behavior. Behavior genetics focus is on the effect of heredity on differences between individuals. (Boyd & Bee, 2006) Heredity refers to genetic and traits being transmitted from one generation to the contiguous or from the pargonnt to the offspring. Traits or behaviors argon believed to be influenced by genes when those of related people, much(prenominal) as children and their parents, are more than similar than those of unrelated people. (Boyd & Bee, 2006)Behavior geneticists study behavior genetics and the way they can affect an individual. Behavior geneticists have shown in their studies that heredity can affect some traits and behaviors, like intelligence, shyness, and aggressiveness. The basic concepts of behavior genetics are phenotypes which are observable or measurable characteristics (hair and eye color) genotype which are genetic complement of an individual, like having a recessive gene for color blindness polygenic which is many genes influencing a trait but no one gene has a major effect (hundreds of genes influence IQ and personality).Correlations between Heredity and EnvironmentCorrelation between heredity and environment can be looked at through with(predicate) genotypes or a persons unique genetic blueprint (Boyd & Bee, 2006) and the environment which a child tends to experience. Active genotype environment correlation, evocative genotype environment correlation, and dormant genotype environment correlation are three casual mechanisms to describe the correlation between heredity and environment in relationship to human behavior (Scarr & McCartney, 1983, p.4). Genotype environment correlations affect phenotypes through the course of a persons development (p.4). A childs development stems directly from traits his or her parents pass along and environmental experien ces thence behavioral genetics has developed theories of the correlation between heredity and environment.Active genotype environment correlation is defined as a childs tendency actively to seek environments he or she finds to be compatible and stimulating (Santrock, 2002, 2). An example would be a child who is introverted tends to seek only(a) environments. A child who is extroverted tends to seek out social environments. Evocative genotype environment correlation is when the childs genotype elicits certain types of somatogenetic and social environments (19). The responses a child receives from his or her environment molds the childs development. A child who demonstrates a pleasant disposition evokes positive reactions in his or her social environment for example. (Scarr & McCartney, 1983, p.4)Passive genotype environment correlation describes correlation found on the rearing environment (Santrock, 2002, 31) supplied by the biological parents . The explanation the passive type of correlation is the parent passed the genes to the child and supplies the environment in which the child is raised. The environment a parent supplies is directly related to the parents genes which were passed to the child hence the correlation (Scarr & McCartney, 1983, p.4). The example given by Scarr and McCartney is one of a positive nature. A parent who is well versed and enjoys the activity of reading books reads often to the child. The child allow most likely be well versed at reading books and enjoy the activity based on the environment provided and the genotype inherited.The Ugly office of EugenicsAs mentioned previously, the ethical study of genetics is a concern. Galton and his American colleague, Charles Davenport, studied and promoted eugenics in an effort to improve the quality of valet de chambre and to create a better future for mankind. Galton and Davenport researched patterns for undesirable character traits such as alcoholism, insanity, the propensity for crimi nality. In time, certain behavioral tendencies were linked to particular races. Lehrman cited examples of Davenports characterizations of Italians as drawn toward crimes of personal violence, Greeks as slovenly, and Swedes as tidy (1998, 8).Society began to adopt laws and policies based on the principles of Galtons and Davenports findings with the purpose of correcting social and economic problems before they started. Although Nazi Germany was the first rude to rationalize mass sterilization and then extermination of a race based on their perceived inferiority, the United States also contributed to the mindset of an inferior people. As many as 30 states had legislation concerning the sterilization of people regarded as genetically inferior. The horror and immorality of the holocaust discredited eugenics. Ethics are a guiding force for todays human behavior geneticists who seek to understand traits that enhance the human race and those that are harmful (Lehrman, 1998).Twin StudiesId entifying traits that are beneficial and those that are harmful is just the first of many steps. Behavior geneticists must also identify correlations between the genes humans inherit and the environment that humans are fostered in. Researchers have an exceedingly difficult task before them since experiences and environments are intricately influenced by genetic predispositions. For example, selfsame(a) twins both are natural taller than average. When they complete surveys for behavioral geneticists, they both score high for people who are extroverted and self-confident.Is this because they have a self-esteem gene, or is this a result of ships company reacting towards them in a manner with more respect and attention because they are tall (Piercy, nd.)?Likewise, a child who is predisposed towards shyness will not seek out social situations that are uncomfortable to her. She may not choose to participate in organized sports. Whatever athletic ability or genius she may possess will remain dormant. Due to her choices, she will not receive any instruction to develop athletic ability.Conclusions that outgoing individuals possess more athletic ability could be grossly inaccurate (Boyd & Bee, 2006).Due to the difficulty found in the previous two illustrations, most research involves fraternal and identical twin sets for the following reasonsFraternal twins raised together show a correlation with a shared environment but not agenetic sameness. identical twins raised apart as adoptees show correlations for non-shared environmentsbut a shared genetic foundation.One such study examined the influences of heredity and environment on the differences of childrens conversational nomenclature use among twins. The study measured language skills with two standardized tests among 380 twins. According to the study, more than half of the variance in conversational language skills can be attributed to genetics. Additionally, evidence was not found to support significant shared en vironmental influence. This study sheds new light on this issue. Previously, differences were attributed to environmental influences such as premature birth and low birth weight (DeThorne et al., 2008).ConclusionTo be born and die are common to all animals, but on that point are specifically diverse ways in which these phenomena occur. (Aristotle, trans. 1984). How humans grow and mature behaviorally is important in understanding the impact heredity, shared and non-shared environmental experiences have on humans. As humans age behavioral social-environmental and psychological changes emerge in a direct correlation with cultural and environmental influences. Environmental, heredity and behavioral genetics all give rise to obesity, pre-diabetes, atherosclerosis, cancer, immune-suppression, menopause, and osteoporosis(Biological, Social-Environmental, and Psychological Dialecticism An Integrated Model of Aging, 2000). As well with age innate biological changes impact our brain based o n both shared and non-shared environmental experiences. A keen understanding of morbidity, mortality and how genetics influence both health and behavior are all important factors in how biological changes in thebrain are associated with each stage of aging. Human behavior can be influenced by genetic pre-dispositions as well as shared and non shared environmental experiences each of these forces account for physical changes and/or declines throughout adulthood.ReferencesBlumenthal, H. Leadership Quality of Kumar Mangalam Birla Essay

Are we doing everything we can to help mess be the best they can be? asked Birla in the Q203 issue of The Smart Manager. The question is tight to his heart. Since he took over the reins at the Birla Group he has focused on fine tuning the groups talent pool. If this meant taking hard decisions Birla did not shy away. More than 350 senior managers left the group. Some through natural attrition, another(prenominal)s through counseling, leaving space for new faces and new talent.Management means attracting able people, nurturing them, developing them, and giving them space, asserts Birla, decisions need to be made at every level and decisions need to be quick. So, we have to spot, incubate and groom talent at every level of the organization, because more people need to be making high quality decisions. To build this culture in the group, Birla has created a system found on meritocracy. His HR initiatives fall chthonic three broad heads learning and relearning, performance manage ment and organizational renewal. For example Gyanodaya, the groups learning nub falls in the prototypal category.It helps in the transfer of best practices across group companies thus sharpening the groups competitive edge. The training calendar is companionable to employees via Aditya Disha, the group wide intranet, and the teaching programs consist of a mix of classroom, bring outreach, and e-learning initiatives. Birla has also instituted The Organisational Health Survey (OHS) which tracks the satisfaction levels of 8,670 managers across the group. A direct result of such initiatives is that straight off his brand as an employer has enhanced significantly, allowing Birla to access to some of the best minds and talent available in the country.The group is considered among the aggrandizement 20 preferred employers in Asia. For performance management Birla instituted the Aditya Birla Sun divides an annual internal awards system. Here each group play along makes an open pres entation on their successes and failures to a group of cd managers drawn from divers(prenominal) group businesses. This leads to information sharing and also encourages healthy competition in the group. Birla believes that star performers need appreciation and recognition. It is very important for people who are doing well to be told they are doing well, he says.He insists that performance levels jump considerably higher afterward a person/team receives an award. The Aditya Birla award is for teams while the chairmans award is for individuals. A group company that has won numerous such awards is Hindalco. Birla has transformed Hindalco into a globally competitive non-ferrous metals company. The first step was to merge the copper division of Indo Gulf with Hindalco unifying the groups non-ferrous metals business under one company with 40% market share. He acquired 74. 6 % equity stake in Indal for Rs 10 bn to make it a wholly owned subsidiary of Hindalco.This made him the largest producer of aluminum in India and today Hindalco-Indal command a 70% market share. Having made Hindalco competitive now Birla is pursuing market growth. He latterly entered the Rs 2. 50 bn branded foil market. within a year of launch Hindalco captured a 40% market share and put a robust distribution in place. Last year Hindalco launched of as many as five branded products. The launch of Aura Alloy Wheels in early 2002, uniquely positioned as dress code for your car, was followed by the launch of its kitchen utility range Freshwrapp aluminium foil and Freshpakk semi-rigid containers, and Everlast roofing sheets.Hindalco also introduced Al Planet, a unique exhi partion format highlighting products from the secondhand aluminium industry. For organic growth Birla has embarked on an Rs18 bn brownfield expansion at Hindalcos integrated complex in Renukoot to increase aluminum metal capacity from 100,000 TPA to 342,000 TPA. This leave behind ensure Hindalcos leadership position in the domestic market and improve its export markets as well. But while Birla was revamping Hindalco, a move towards extricate the cross-holdings among group companies, a legacy of the licence raj, was also initiated.He unified his diverse companies under the Aditya Birla Group head. If one were to encapsulate it (the group strategy) in a single word the dominant strategic theme over the past four years has been consolidation, says Birla. The process was threefold. Birla rearranged the companies, consolidated market presence in the different industries and then went on an acquisition spree to further strengthen leadership position. The result is a streamlined group with all aluminium companies merged under Hindalco, cement companies under Grasim, copper companies under Birla Copper and textiles and garments under Indian Rayon.Losing some of its loss making divisions also made Indo Gulf a debt freehanded fertilizer company. In the process the groups r raseues have risen from Rs 72 bn t o Rs 270 bn in eight years. Our strategy dictates that we gain out of businesses where we are bit players and strengthen the businesses where we have clear competencies, so that we get to the top of the league or consolidate our position there, as the case may be. This leads to a card sharp and tighter business portfolio with our firepower being better targeted, says Birla. Birla began with Grasim in 1995.His first step was to move the cement division of Indian Rayon to Grasim, thereby integrating the cement holdings within the group. then in 2003 he acquired the cement division of Larsen & Toubro for Rs 22 bn increasing Grasims total capacity to 31 MTPY. Today Grasim is the largest producer of cement in India and the 7th largest in the world. Similarly the copper division of Indo Gulf was divested and incorporated into Birla Copper. Then Birla increased the smelter capacity of Birla Copper from 100,00 to 150,00 MTPY and acquired two copper mines in Australia.Birla has been nick named the non-ferrous general by the industry his aluminium, copper, and carbon black units are ranked among the top three in their respective segments. Indian Rayon also saw salient changes in portfolio. Its cement division was demerged. Then it acquired Madura Garments, the apparels and garments division of Madura Coats for Rs 2. 6 bn in January 2000. This takeover gave Indian Rayon ownership of prominent brands Louis Philippe, Van Heusen, Allen Solly, Byford, Peter England and San Frisco. This marked a dramatic change in focus for the commodity based group.Though a major player in textiles, Birla had not been able to impact the branded menswear market. build brands from scratch takes time as well as money, and the easiest way was to acquire an established one. The apparels business is one in which we want a leadership position. We pull up stakes make a focused entry into the high-value, ready-to-wear segment. This acquisition as well as the acquisition of certain overseas bra nd rights has catapulted the group to the top of the league in the branded apparels market, says Birla. Today after a long period of negative growth Madura Garments has reported a 14. % increase in revenues. As a part of the restructuring process he sold Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals to ONGC. The exit from MRPL indicates our firm resolve to rationalized the Groups portfolio of businesses with a view on the future, and also bears proof of our commitment to a key group of stakeholders our lenders, says Birla. The other major restructuring at Indian Rayon was demerging the insulator business into a new JV with Japanese company NGK to sustain leadership position and to acquire a global marketing network for the insulator business.The consolidation initiative has allowed each company to emerge with a stronger balance sheet. The three largest companies in the group, Grasim, Hindalco, Indian Rayon, turned in a cumulative net profit of Rs 10. 55 bn in FY03, a jump of 2. 1% from FY0 2. Their combined sales increased to Rs 110. 45 bn in FY03, an increase of 36% over the previous year. The groups overall revenues touched Rs 2,700 bn. Management way of life Birla is his fathers son, but he has gradually developed his own personal management style.Commonalities include performance orientation, a strict eye for detail, closemouthed attention to budgets. Differences include more informal interaction with managers from top to bottom a greater gap between personal and office life and a strong emphasis on financial performance. For example he has replaced the old Parta system, which focused only on production with the Cash Value Added method, which emphasizes profitability, asset productiveness and growth. Birla is a firm believer in meritocracy. In his fathers time, there were several marwaris in top management. Today there are rush of non-marwaris.He places a lot of emphasis on HR and hired Santrupt Mishra from Hindustan Lever to spearhead the groups HR initiatives . A 360 degree feedback program that allows managers to question even Birlas own leadership style and does away with the babu culture prevalent in the group. But while on one hand Birla nurtures employees, on the other he is very careful about performance measures. Birla is equally adamant about strict adherence to policies and procedures that have been discussed and approved. For example he introduced a solitude policy, similar to the one Ratan Tata introduced over at the TataGroup.While a cresendo of unhappiness was heard at Bombay House, peaceful silence reigned at Industry House. At Lever House, no doubt Vindi Banga is closely watching these events. Birlas retirement policy saw 325 senior executives, between the ages of 62 and 65, step down after years of service. Though the policy was drafted in 2001, he took a year to implement. He then hired 190 young executives to infuse fresh and out of the box thinking in the group. I think its been one of the most important decisions Ive had to make, says Birla.People skills are Birlas biggest strength. He has the ability to get on with both the old guard and the new turks. Soft spoken and insistent Birla likes to be directly involved. For example he sends individual notes to employees regarding their performance. Debu Bhattacharya currently the managing theatre director of Hindalco and another former Hindustan Lever employee says, it wont be an exaggeration to say that I joined this group because of Mr Birla. For somebody who is from a highly consider MNC in the country, going to an Indian business house, I had a lot of reservations.My reservations came from that perception of the group. But I was so overawed with his simplicity, his genuineness, and his ability to explain innocent things without trying to sell the job. If I had to take that decision all over again Id do the same. For all this Kumar is a low profile person, with a sense of humor and the rare ability to laugh at himself. This ease spills into his business relationships. For example the stalemate between the houses of Tata and Birla is now history. Ratan Tata recently invited Birla to join the board of Tata Steel, and Birla just as easily accepted.

Multisensor Strategies to Assist Blind People Using Gsm

MULTISENSOR STRATEGIES TO SUPPORT BLIND PEOPLE USING GSM Abstract The ripening of electronic sensing wiles for the visually impaired requires cognition of the needs and abilities of this class of people. In this project we present a rough analysis that can be used to properly define the criteria to be follow for the design of such devices. In particular, attention will be focused on clear-path indicators, highlighting their role in orientation and mobility tasks. A new device belonging to this class is presented.The detector is based on a multisensor strategy and adopts smart signal processing to provide the user with suitable in organizeation most the position of objects hindering his or her path. Experimental trials demonstrate the efficiency of the device developed. Introduction About 1% of the human population is visually impaired, and amongst them about 10% is fully blind. One of the consequences of being visually impaired is the limitations in mobility. For global navigatio n, many tools already exist. For instance, in outdoor situations, handheld GPS systems for the blind are at present available.These tools are not helpful for local navigation local path planning and collision avoidance. The traditional tools, i. e. the guide dog and the cane, are appreciated tools, and nevertheless these tools do not adequately solve the local navigation problems. Guide dogs are not employable at a large casing (the training capacity in the Netherlands is about 100 guide dogs yearly just enough to help about 1000 users). The cane is too restrictive. The intent of this research is to develop a wearable tool that assists the blind to accomplish his local navigation tasks.Fig shows the architecture of the proposed tool. It consists of a receptive system controlled by the user. The primary data needed for local navigation is range data (which is not necessarily obtained from visual data alone at this point, the type of sensors is facilitate an open question). The m apper converts the range data into map data. The local map is the input to a warning system that transforms the map data into a form that is suitable for communication. In order to give the blind person freedom of movement, he must be able to control the focus of attention of the sensory system. For hat purpose, the tool must be provided with a man-machine interface Block diagram Ultrasonic sensor Object detect sensor circuit shock MAX 232 Microcontroller At89C2051 GSM module RF Tx RF Encoder RF Rx Decoder DSP Speech IC Head phone Amplifier The ultimate goal of this project is to provide an electronic tool for the local navigation task of the blind. The tool must provide information about the direct surroundings of the blind to enable him to move close to without collisions. We assume that, although mostly unknown, the environment does have some structure such as in an urban outdoor situation (e. . a street), or in an indoor situation smooth floors, now and then a doorstep, stairs , walls, door openings and all kind of objects that possibly obstruct the passage. We start with three sensor types stereovision, optical flow, and sonar. Preliminary research has shown that other types of sensors are also of interest, e. g. ladar, radar and infrared (detection of people and traffic). The system should be expandable such that the information from these types of sensors can be integrated easily in a later stage of the project.Functioning overview of this Projects 1) Whenever the blind want go to particular place, before that he will mystify the path through mobile. 2) Wherever he wants to go he has to carry this system. 3) When he is going out his system will communicate to house through GSM. 4) After receiving the data from blind system, it will communicate through voice using head phone. 5) This same data will send to house by GSM. 6) The house members can monitor the blind through mobile and which street, which area he is going. ) This system will victuals the blind and the children also. 8) The ultrasonic will support the blind distance of each object. 9) RF will support the path name, signal identification. Advantages 1) Automation of all Customers to communicate through remote GSM using mobile. 2) however data using automatic control systems. 3) Less cost to communicate. 4) Less power to automate. 5) Increase Safety. 6) To increase n number of person to communicate and automate. 7) escaped and fast identification system. Future scopeThe application of this project to help navigate people around unknown places has a large scope of development in the field of technologies it uses. With the advancement in the technology, readers are getting smaller and faster with greater ability to self program. Conclusion We made an attempt to induce a prototype for assisting blind people to sense the objects around them so that we can reduce the probability of collisions. More over by using to a greater extent efficient and reliable components we c an make a reliable one which effectively visualizes the blind people. 1.

Social Commentary

English 1101 Social Commentary Essay The automobile has had a amazing impact on society and the environment since its development in the beginning of the 20th century. Today, there are over 500 million motor vehicles on the earth. People enjoy their privacy and the convenience of an automobile. There are no schedules to keep track of. A person can come and go from a destination at their own free will. They also befuddle the ability to travel and see scenery that people are limited to on human beings transportation.The automobiles efficiency, style, and performance have changed over the years, but there is one thing that has not change that they are unquestionable. Americans love owning cars and driving cars beca using up they dont have to wait for buses, and trains. In todays society there are many ways to get around but a car is to a greater extent reliable than riding public transportation or walking. Public transportation have set times that they are available also, they are n ot reliable.I use to ride public transportation and it made me late several times for diffe stock split appointments and jobs, and I have lost jobs due to riding the bus. Cars are reliable because you dont have to wait for the car to come get you. Americans love owning cars in the winter, so they dont have to wait in the cold for the bus or the train. When a train or bus breaks down it takes several hours for them to be repaired. When a car breaks down you can rent another car until your car gets repaired, this is a benefit to owning a car.

The structure of the travel, touristry and hospitality Industry First of all, there are so some a(prenominal) different aspects to define the tourism Industry . Most of us will follow the definition from the military personnel Tourism Organization (WTFO).It defines Tourism as one activities of human traveling to and staying in places outside their familiar area for not more(prenominal) than one year for leisure, business line, and other purposes. And in side the Tourism, it related to many parts of business and organizations to promote the tourism product. They consist three sectors from the tourism environment. There are world sectors, hush-hush sectors and voluntary sectors. The public sectors mean the government of the country involved in the industry of tourism now or indirectly, for example, the National Tourism Organization (ONTO).What the public sectors to do s by directly building the facilities and destinations or training the people who work related to the Industry Indirectly. And what the public sectors done will make a widely range of Influence to the relevant travel Issues all around the world-Next the private sectors covers all the commercial businesses Like the chain hotels, airlines, restaurants or even the tour operators-This kind of sectors purpose is make silver and it mountain contains all levels of distribution chain, which means the private sectors can be a suppliers, wholesalers and the retailers at the same time.Whats more is the voluntary sectors, they are not the organization pursuing profit compared to the private sector. Let represents the specific interests of the members in the group and f ormed a unique purpose to promote the tourism.For example, the National association of Travel Agents Singapore, it promotes and enhance cooperation between the travel agents, playing an important role of negotiating for members and to make the public attend the services which the members can provide which Is a guarantee of competence-And besides the tourism, the part of travel also can be operated to many kinds of way-Sea travel Like the cruise trip, people choose the cruise instead of race because it provides everything you need from entertainment, beautiful views of countryside and even the traditional local spot of the destinations.Air travel is so common to describe, by the airplane people can go another place with the shortest time and figure out international, heathen different backgrounds. And domestic road travel provide a convenient way for the visitors that they can go anyway in the country, driving by themselves which not limited by time or money else. Whats more, the hospitality industry according to different sized operations,different customers can divided to many kinds of sector. For instance, the accommodation, gambling, holidays park,events,visitors attraction and so on.For example, the Singapore airline businesss takeovers the Jetsam Airlines to make their customers have more choices of flight lines. Instead of horizontal desegregation, vertical integration is make the company gets greater control and it involved in different levels of operations. Compared to backward vertical integration, forward vertical integration is more common. It is mean the company buys the further down equines under then distribution chain. On the other hand is mean that the forward vertical integration gaining more closer to the consumer.For example, the Airline company takeover the travel agent to obtain well control the distribution and plan, organize more efficient, profitable package for the company. Backward vertical integration mean the company buy upwar d business and it is moving further from the customers. For example, the Thomas Cook Holidays setting up Thomas Cook Airways. In conclusion, we can find that the integration leads to more control and benefit to one business.
